Maria was born in a rural area of the Philippines. She grew up knowing what it is like to be hungry and it made her appreciate generosity. With a very limited and uncertain family income, she learned to be resourceful. She experienced several typhoons during her childhood and it trained her to be quick to respond to disasters. All these experiences guided Maria to a position where she can extend a helping hand which is why she started the Maria Shircel Foundation.

Maria started her foundation in 2013, in response to a typhoon that raged across Leyte, Philippines. She received pleas for help from relatives giving her first hand accounts of how desperate the situation was. She contacted a friend on another island that wanted to help and Maria set to work organizing relief efforts - her international phone bill was enormous! Seeing how tremendous a task it would be to help so many people in crisis, and in hopes of recruiting more help, Maria started the Maria Shircel Foundation.

The Maria Shircel Foundation started from an immediate and dire need for food, clothing, repairs, and even emergency burials following a natural disaster in the Philippines. When students returned to damaged schools, we were able to send school supplies that teachers needed to get classes going again. We have been able to help hungry and homeless Filipinos in the streets. And with donations that are not suitable for the tropical climate, the foundation has been able to help local Clarksvillians that need a hand.

I met a man without feet. His job was to feed the birds. The job didn't pay much so he was barely able to afford the food necessary to sustain himself. He considered not working the day I met him because the pay really was so little but something told him to go. Seeing his sad situation, I was moved to help. He says he felt a pull to go today and that he was meant to meet me so he might get more food and survive a little longer. I hope to check on him at his bird feeding spot on my return trip and will be sure to update you.
I was standing in line for food at a place that can be compared to a McDonald restaurant. I was about to order when I saw a poor woman, without slippers, counting her coins and checking the menu for prices. It was obvious she wasn't going to be able to afford much. I asked her how she was doing and she told me she and her family were so hungry and related her obvious money issue. I told her to buy anything she wanted for herself and her family and I would pay for it. She broke down and cried while she hugged me.
I went to one of the classrooms to deliver donations of pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, etc., and I could feel the excitement in the air! The children lined up and received items from the box. A little girl toward the end of the line started crying so I asked what was wrong. She said the box looked almost empty and she was afraid she would not get anything. I pointed to where other boxes were stacked and assured her there would be something for her, if not from the open box, than from one of the other boxes! She smiled and promised not to cry and instead waited eagerly for her turn. Afterward, other teachers gave me their names and number of students in hopes that their classrooms would be blessed with supplies, decent clothes and even shoes for some of the children.
